FOOD IN YORUBA

Lesson Content

1. Greeting & Lesson Overview

  • “Welcome to today’s Yoruba class where we explore delicious foods from Yorùbáland!”

Objectives:

  • Recognize and name different types of Yoruba food
  • Identify key ingredients used in their preparation
  • Practice Yoruba pronunciation and spelling of food names

 

2. Core Vocabulary Presentation

Introduce Yoruba food terms with images and ingredient associations:

Èlùbọ̀ (Yam flour powder) → used to make Àmàlà

Ìyán (Pounded yam) ← made from Ìṣù (Yam)

Ìkọ̀kọ̀rẹ́ (Water yam pottage) ← from Ìṣù

Àsàró (Yam pottage) ← from Ìṣù

Ẹ̀kọ (Corn flour jelly) ← from Àgbàdo (Maize)

Ẹ̀wà Ágọ̀nyìn (Mashed beans), Èkuru, Mọ́ímọ́ì ← from Ẹ̀wà (Beans)

Gàrí, Fùfú, Èbà ← from Ẹ̀gè́ (Cassava)

 

  • Ingredient Phrases Practice

“…ni a fi ń ṣe…” = “…is used to prepare…”

Use repetition and call-and-response with images.

 

3. Pronunciation Drill

Instructor pronounces each food item and its ingredient

Learners repeat in chorus and individually

4. Interactive Task

Match Yoruba food to the correct image and ingredient

Listen and identify: “Which food is made from Ẹ̀gè́?”

Writing task: “Write 5 names of Yoruba food”
